United Kingdom and Ireland Census Transcriptions

England and Wales Census Records

A Census has been taken in England and Wales every 10 years since 1801, except 1941 when England had more important things to do.
Some census returns have limited information for the genealogist, namely 1801 thru 1831.
The 1931 census was destroyed during the war.
There is a 100 year waiting period for releasing census information (currently under review).
This leaves the following useful census's for genealogical research:
YearDateComments
18416 JuneLimited information, see below)
185130 March
18617 April
18712 April
18813 AprilFree access at LDS or Ancestry
18915 April
190131 March
The 1841 census did not include place of birth or relationships and the ages (above 15) were rounded down 5 years (i.e. a stated age of 40 really means 40-44).
All of the above census records (including images of the orginals) are available at Ancestry.co.uk, but at a cost.
What we have tried to do on this page is to provide links to samples of free census transcriptions that have been published on the web.
However, it must be stressed that looking at images of the orginal really is something you should do.

TIP: If you are just starting out try to gather as much information from the free 1881 census.
Also, remember that the indexes were created by mere humans and consequently contain mistaks, it all adds to the fun!
Scotland Census Records

Census's have been taken in Scotland at the same times as those in England and Wales (as above).
The big difference is that the Gov of Scotland provide access to the records (on a pay-as-you-go basis).
The site is called Scotland's People.
Ancestry.co.uk does provide an index to 1841, 1851, 1861, 1871 and 1891 but does not provide the images of the originals.
Ireland Census Records

The earliest complete census of Ireland to survive is 1901.

International Genealogy Index I.G.I.

The largest, free, searchable database of UK & Ireland Parish Records is the International Genealogy Index (IGI) which is maintained by the Church of Latter Day Saints.
Beware: the IGI contains a large number of original record transcriptions, however it also contains a number of early genealogies submitted by people like you and me. These latter records are not sourced and many are inaccurate. It is highly recommended that the IGI is used as an index to help you find the orginal record (there may also be usful notes attached to the original record that are not transcribed into the IGI). Many "submitted by member" records take a wide guess at birth dates using the formula "marriage date - x years" where x = 25 for males and 20 for females.
Parish Records were generally recorded at the place the particular ceremony took place (eg church). Annually these records were copied and sent to the presiding Bishop; these latter records are known as Bishop's Transcripts. The IGI contains a mix of original Parish Records and Bishop's Transcripts. When recording information from the IGI it is worth noting the original source. Click on the Source Call Number to find the origin.
The Source Call Number is also required when you go down to your local Family History Centre to order the relevant microfilm.

The IGI database can be searched in one of 2 basic ways; by name / event / date or by collection.
Searching by "name / event / date" is fairly obvious, however reading the search tips is recommended as there are several limitations.
Searching by collection is a little more complicated but can be a very effective (particularly when a first name is not known).
The collections that make up the IGI are given Batch Numbers; each "batch" contains the entries from a source within a time period. Typically a source would be a particular church. If a Batch Number is entered on the IGI Search Page all other fields are considered optional - this gives you alot more flexibility to define search criteria.

There are 2 ways to determine the Batch Number for a particular location / date;
(a) find an entry for a record in the batch and at the bottom of the displayed record (under Source Information:) will be the Batch Number (eg C044872). Note that the displayed Batch Number is a link, clicking it will take you back to the IGI Search form with the selected Batch Number filled in and all other fields empty.
(b) Use a District to Batch Number Index. One is Hugh Wallis's Genealogical Web Sites which covers both the UK and North America and provides the IGI Batch Numbers by country / county / town / church / date. In fact it provides an easy to user interface to the IGI Search Page if searching for a particular surname.
Tip: use the Hugh Wallis site in conjuction with PARLOC to search for a surname within a geographical area.
Aside: Hugh Wallis's site also provides a middle name IGI index - very useful if your family used grand-parent surnames as middle names!
